The Wisdom of Wisdom Tooth Extractions

July 2, 2017

Modern dentistry has a focus on prevention. That means we work with patients on a regular basis to stop the majority of oral health concerns before they even begin. Unfortunately, there are some dental health issues that can’t be avoided with regular checkups at Sage Dental Care. One of the restorative treatments patients typically can’t avoid is wisdom tooth extraction, a common procedure for teens and young adults. Typically, we do our utmost to help patients preserve healthy teeth. Unfortunately, wisdom teeth rarely erupt from the jaw line without causing concerns. Around the age of twelve, we should be able to see the developing wisdom teeth on x-rays, and we can begin to create a treatment plan. If you’d like to find out more about wisdom teeth and tooth extractions in our Boulder dentistry practice, please don’t hesitate to contact the Sage Dental Care team.

Five Reasons to Get a Back to School Dental Checkup

August 12, 2014

Filed under: Sage Blog — Tags: , , — Dr. Terry Batliner @ 9:08 pm

In getting ready for a new school year, most parents end up with a long back-to-school list.  While buying school supplies and clothes is something Mom or Dad can do on their own, if you want to get a back to school dental checkup, you will need to schedule it for your child before their schedules fill up with homework, sports and other after school activities.

1. Dental Problems is the Number One Reason Kids Miss School

Did you know that more than 51 million school hours are lost annually because of illnesses related to dental problems?  Childhood tooth decay, is the #1 chronic childhood illness? Pediatric dental disease is 7 times more common than hay fever and 5 times more common than asthma.

Data from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey reported:

  • 41% of children aged 2 to 11 years had cavities  in their primary teeth
  • 42% of those aged 6 to 19 years had cavities in their permanent teeth.

2014 Dental Benefits Will Expire

August 3, 2014

Make sure you use your remaining dental insurance benefits for the year. It is easy to forget that you have a remaining balance left on your dental insurance. You need to use these for treatment before the end of 2014, or your dental benefits will expire and you’ll lose them. On most every plan, the yearly maximum renews every year on January 1st. In the new year, you will need to meet the deductible again. Also, if you participate in a Flexible Spending or Health Savings Account, and you don’t use those before the end of the year, you will forfeit any left-over money in these account. Don’t spend all year paying for benefits that you don’t use.

Dr. Batliner to Keynote 2014 International Indigenous Oral
Health Conference

June 25, 2014

One of my passions as a dentist is improving oral health to under served populations. Close to 50 million Americans live in dental health shortage areas– regions of the country that are designated as dental health professional shortage areas by the U.S Department of Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration. The Pew Center estimates than 17 million poor children go without dental care each year.

However, the  problem is much worse for American Indians living on the reservations in this country. As  a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, this issue is very important to me. While most of the patients I see at Sage have quite easy access to regular dental care, the situation is totally different for indigenous populations.

Mouth Guards

June 3, 2014

Did you know that more than 5 million teeth are broken or knocked out every year from sports related injuries and up to 40 percent of all sports injuries involve the face. (Source: Study Dentistry UBC)  If you or your children participate in sports without a mouth guard, you are 60 times more likely to suffer damage to your mouth.

There is a good reason that the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) requires mouthguards for four sports (ice hockey, lacrosse, field hockey and football). And the American Dental Association recommends the use of custom mouth guards in 29 sports/exercise activities.

To Boulder’s Healthy Eaters: Some “Health Foods” Can Be Bad For Teeth

March 5, 2014

Filed under: Sage Blog — Tags: , , — Dr. Terry Batliner @ 9:18 pm

As a resident of Boulder, I can tell you that it seems that everyone (well almost) is health conscious. They run, they ride bikes, ski, rock climb and, most of all, they eat right- vegan, vegetarian, gluten or dairy free. Everyone is into health foods.

Last year, the social media site Foursquare rated Boulder Colorado the #1 Healthiest Eating City in America. (Based on the largest number of “check-ins” by Boulderites to healthy spots like juice bars, salad shops, yoga studios, etc.) And the Magazine  Bon Appétit rated Boulder America’s Foodiest Town and the criteria included quality farmers’ markets, concerned farmers, and a community of food lovers.

8 Foods that Damage Your Teeth

November 20, 2013

In addition to daily brushing and flossing, one of the best things you can do to keep you teeth healthy is to educate yourself on foods that damage your teeth.

You’ve been told since you were a kid that sugar is bad. But do most people think of bread, dried fruits, popcorn, or your child’s favorite peanut butter and jelly sandwich as being somehow hard on their teeth?
